The zine was designed for an environmental field trip and is formed to save on ink and paper. Printable from any classroom inkjet printer on standard 8.5''x11'' paper the pamphlet keeps the instructor in mind.
The back cover has instructional graphics for folding where a single cut finishes the booklet. The folding process is a system in itself and a teachable moment. The zine fits neatly into a pocket and travels well for further study.
After information gathering with the client the team used a brainstorming technique called "rose - bud - thorn" on sticky notes. Rose = things that are already working well, Bud = things that have potential for growth, and Thorn = problems or stumbling blocks for the project.  We also explored stakeholder sentiment for the project, with empathy maps, we asked ourselves how each person might think and feel, what they see, what they hear, and what they say and do in their roles surrounding the field-trip program.
The colors red, white, and blue were chosen to ease the minds of parents that may not be interested in their child learning about environmentalism (it was the clients biggest concern). Colors were de-saturated to save on ink. Yes, this entire booklet is a subversive way to initiate students and their parents to think about sustainability without ever saying it.
Improved efficiency in our systems will saves money and reduces waste.
